The theater is now the Count Basie
The year was 1939. Ken Lockwood, now 90, was told by his dad, after he graduated from high school that he needed to go out and get a job. So, that's what Lockwood did. He wandered down Monmouth Street in Red Bank and saw a sign in the window of the then Carlton Theater, now Count Basie, that said "Ushers Wanted." He was hired on the spot for what he thought then was a fortune. The place only showed movies at the time and he took his job very seriously, spending his money on bus fare and candy. Some interesting things happened at the Carlton back in the day. See how much Lockwood made as a teen and find out what was considered the big night at the Carlton. Click on the video above for a glimpse into the past in Red Bank.

When country music superstar Keith Urban takes the stage at tonight's telecast of the “American Country Awards,” one of New Jersey’s most gifted young musicians will rock with him. Count Basie Theatre regular Michael Arrom, 18, has been chosen by the Grammy Foundation to be part of a student band it assembled to play with Urban. He and six other students from throughtout the nation were selected. “I’m not as nervous as I should be but a big part of the excitement is not knowing what to expect. One thing I know for sure: I’m not going to forget this one!," said Arrom, of Warren Township in Somerset County. Arrom frequently appears at Red Bank’s Count Basie Theatre as part of the acclaimed “RockIt!” rock performance program. His …

Check out what's happening at the Count Basie and Two River Theater this week.
Red Bank's playing host to an eclectic mix of entertainment options at both the Count Basie Theatre and the Two River Theater this week, including improv comedy, the sound stylings of Eastern Europe, the jams of the 1980's, and a homegrown musical developed in a TRTC workshop. You know Whose Line is it Anyway? The short form improvisational television comedy originated in England before eventually finding its way to the United States where it ran for eight seasons. For the eighth time Friday, stars of the show are bringing the same style of comedy to Basie stage. Promising plenty of laughs but with none of the script, Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood, Whose Line show regulars, are presenting a night of completely improvised comedy. Armed …

Check out what's happening at the Count Basie and Two River Theater this week.
This week, Red Bank’s theaters offer you plenty of options for your entertainment buck. From the continued run of an August Wilson classic, a sick and tired comedienne, and Valentine’s doo-wop, there’s something for every one right here in everyone’s favorite town. She’s found career success as an actress, writer, and producer, but for Wanda Sykes, it’s always been about the stand-up comedy. On Thursday, the comedienne who routinely finds humor in her own incredulousness hits the Count Basie stage for a one-night show. Sykes has been recognized as a top comic for more than a decade thanks in part to two HBO specials, writing credits for the Chris Rock Show, significant roles in major Hollywood features, and several television shows, …
