Later this month, “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro returns to the scene of his first ever live performance, the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, for a leg of his Homemade for the Holidays Tour. The show is one of 21 in just 22 days, and the only one scheduled in New Jersey, which is still recovering from the destruction unleashed by Hurricane Sandy two weeks ago. Valastro, who owns Carlos Bake Shop in Hoboken, one of the hardest hit cities in New Jersey, said he considers himself one of the lucky ones. Carlo’s lost power and was closed for a week but was lucky to avoid any property damage due to the storm. Phoenix Productions will present the hit Broadway Musical My Fair Lady for two weekends at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank and one weekend at the Strand Center for the Arts in Lakewood, the group recently announced. The Phoenix revival features a cast of 30 performers led by Mandy Feiler as Eliza, a flower girl that learns to become a "proper lady," according to a release. The supporting cast includes familiar Phoenix faces such as Bob Brown as Jamie and Kent Sweeney as Alfred Doolittle, as well as debut performers Jim Neil as Professor Higgins, and Mark Schumacher as Colonel Pickering. Phoenix Productions' presentation of the musical "Legally Blonde" continues for the next two weekends at the Count Basie Theatre and Historical Strand Theater. The revival of the Broadway hit features a cast of 40 performers led by real-life law student Leigh Emery of Flanders as Elle Woods, a sorority girl turned Harvard scholar, according to a release. Other supporting cast members include familiar Phoenix members such as Phil Mazzarra as Emmett, Andrea Brooks as Paulette, and September McCarthy as Crystal. Justine L. Robertson was announced as the new Interim CEO of the Theatre and its Foundation.
In a departure from the past several years, the Count Basie Theatre's Board of Trustees has opted to merge the Basie and its Foundation under a new leadership structure being headed by Rumson resident Justine Robertson. The theater made the announcement of Robertson's hiring Thursday. She will serve as CEO of both entities in an interim position. According to Ray Moser, chairman of the board of trustees said unifying the leadership of the two organizations under a CEO will help the theater better integrate programming, operations and fundraising, he said in a release.
