Video: Sacrificing Cones to Save Lives

At its recent National Night Out, Red Bank's Police Department used drunk goggles and a mini-driving course to illustrate the dangers of drunken driving.

Driving under the influence is a serious problem. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly a third of all traffic-related deaths involve alcohol, nearly 11,000 in 2009 alone. In an effort to demonstrate the dangers of drinking and driving, the Red Bank Police Department set up a golf cart driving course at its recent National Night Out complete with tight turns and plenty of orange cones. To simulate drunken driving, police used "Fatal Vision" goggles, which distort the wearer's vision and are designed to portray and accurate version of driving under the influence. Red Bank Teen Sentenced in M'Town Road Death

Adam Sofio, 19, was sentenced to six years in prison for his role in a fatal 2011 crash that killed his friend Paul Bradley.

A Red Bank teen who pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and assault in the 2011 road death of a close friend was sentenced six years in a New Jersey State Prison Thursday, Monmouth County Prosecutor Peter E. Warshaw Jr. announced. Adam Sofio, 19, pleaded guilty to second-degree vehicular homicide and third-degree assault by auto in February, nearly a year after his reckless drunk driving resulted in the death of Middletown resident Paul T. Bradley, 18, and the serious bodily injury of John F. Vogel, 19, also of Middletown. At his plea hearing, Sofio admitted to consuming a substantial amount of alcohol and operating a vehicle at more than three times the posted 25 mile per hour speed limit on Cooper Road in Middletown.
