Emily Reardon, who graduated from Red Bank Regional last month and is headed to Princeton to study creative writing in the fall, says it was a story her mom told her about her days working as a nurse in a hospital's pediatric oncology ward that inspired a piece she wrote called "The Boy in the Blue Sweater." Reardon, 18, submitted the one-page piece to a writing competition in the fall and found out last week that it is one of five to have been selected for the award's short list. "Our writing teacher would post submission deadlines on the board, and this was one of them," said Reardon, a Little Silver resident. Red Bank Regional’s second annual Battle of the Classes ended Thursday night with a broken tug-of-war rope, the Freshmen looking “Fresh to Death” in their green t-shirts as they lip-synced to High School Musical, the Sophomores winning the uniform contest, the Juniors -- and the Seniors -- “going bananas” as we celebrated our victory in our yellow t-shirts, storming the center of the court after the announcement of the scores. Last May, RBR’s Student Council sponsored the school’s first Battle of the Classes. This year, each team consisted of 10 boys and 10 girls coached by their Class Council Advisors.
