Woman was killed in Monday morning fire
The woman killed in an apartment fire in Long Branch early Monday morning has been identified. Ann D. Lavelle, 79, of 11 Howland Ave., was a resident of the downstairs apartment of the building, and was found dead inside the building. Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Public Information Officer Charlie Webster said her cause of death has not yet been released, because autopsy results are still pending. Webster said the investigative team "conducted a thorough examination of the structure (at 11 Howland Ave.) and identified the area of origin as the rear bedroom." Incident occurred on Willow Avenue on Jan. 3
The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and Long Branch police are investigating a possible homicide that occurred on Willow Avenue last week. County Director of Investigations Marc Limieux said police received a 911 call at 4:20 p.m. Jan. 3 for a report of an unresponsive male in the basement apartment of 326 Willow Ave. Lemieux said the address is one large home with multiple apartments. The victim was later identified as Manuel Vilaseca Cortez, a 39-year-old male from Long Branch. Limieux said Cortez did not live at 326 Willow Ave. He said the case is being "investigated as a homicide," but that no cause of death is available at this time and no suspects have identified. A Neptune man has been found guilty of murdering Nathaniel Wiggins, 24, of Eatontown. Tahj Pines, 27, of Neptune was found guilty of felony murder, conspiracy to commit second-degree robbery, armed robbery and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in connection with the 2008 murder of Wiggins, Acting Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced on Friday. Pines remains incarcerated at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution and is scheduled for sentencing on April 12, 2013, before Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Richard W. English. Massachusetts man scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 22, 2013
A Massachusetts man is facing life in prison after he was found guilty of robbing and beating an 82-year-old Tinton Falls resident at his home, according to Monmouth County Acting Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni. Rafael LaBoy, 31, of Ludlow, Massachusetts was convicted of first- degree robbery, second-degree burglary, third-degree aggravated assault and third-degree theft, and he remains incarcerated at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution (MCCI) in Freehold. Philip Angarone, the former director of marketing for Birdsall Services Group, a large Monmouth-based engineering firm, pleaded guilty Nov. 30 for his role in a scheme in which the firm fraudulently avoided the restrictions of New Jersey’s Pay-to-Play Act by disguising illegal corporate political contributions as personal contributions of employees of the firm, Attorney General Jeffrey S. Philip Emanuele sentenced to five years probation
Former Eatontown police Officer Philip Emanuele, 33, has been sentenced to five years probation on charges of criminal coercion and tampering with physical evidence. Emanuele was an eight-year veteran of the department and was a former detective. He pleaded guilty to the charges last month and was required to immediately forfeit his position and was barred from any future public employment in New Jersey. Borough alerts residents of potential noise of low-flying helicopters
The New Jersey State Police will be doing training exercises near the Fort Monmouth Area Tuesday night. The exercises will begin at 5 p.m. tonight and scheduled to end on Wednesday, according to a message from Tinton Falls Mayor Michael Skudera to residents. The message is also posted on the borough's web site. Mayor Skudera said the training will involve ground and aerial training that will include low-flying helicopters. Mayor Skudera said he was not sure of the exact time the training will end on Wednesday. On Monday night, the Long Branch Police issued an alert to residents that Army training involving helicopters and simulated gunfire would be going on throughtout the night.
