St. James Preschoolers Celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday

Three and 4-year-old students enjoyed Read Across America Day.

As part of Read Across America Day, 3 and 4 year old students at Saint James Preschool celebrated the life and legacy of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as the beloved children's book auther Dr. Suess. As part of Suess' 108th birthday, children honored his memory with green eggs, funny hats, and lessons on a variety of topics with reading, whimsical rhyming and rhythm couning, endearing characters, and helpful messages. According to a release from the school, children and teachers alike came to school in pajamas with their favorite Dr. Suess book. Dr. Suess books are classics, I have been reading them to my children for years. My personal favorite is Green Eggs and Ham. The children look forward to celebrating this day at St. James preschool every year and enjoy wearing the PJs to school in honor of Dr. Suess.   more ›

Local Foundation Donates Thousands of Books to New Jersey Kids

The Bridge of Books Foundation kicked off March with the distribution of almost 20,000 books to New Jersey kids.

New Jersey kids received almost 20,000 books from the Bridge of Books Foundation in honor of Read Across America and Dr. Seuss’ Birthday. Beginning with Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2, the National Education Association promotes literacy events and reading awareness for students with their Read Across America campaign. As a constant participant in the campaign, the Bridge of Books Foundation increased their participation this year by creating reading events at the six Acelero Head Start Centers in Monmouth County. At each event, volunteers read to students from all over the County, and each student at the events went home with two books. Banking and Insurance Commish Reads to Shrewsbury Students

Department of Banking and Insurance Acting Commissioner and borough resident Ken Kobylowski read Dr. Suess' I Can Read With My Eyes Shut and Great Day for Up! at Shrewsbury Boro School as part of Read Across America Day on Friday. "The students were very attentive and respectful. It was a real pleasure to spend some time with them and emphasize to them the importance of reading," Kobylowski said in a statement. Cheryl Quinn, the school’s librarian, said the importance of reading is emphasized beyond March 2. Reading is stressed and encouraged throughout the year. “This is not done for just one day.
