CREDO Report Validates Charter School Philosophy

Report shows charter schools often perform better than traditional public schools.

A recent report from the Center for Research on Education Outcomes paints a positive picture of New Jersey’s charter schools, indicating that its students learn more, on average, than their public school counterparts. Of course it’s good news, Red Bank Charter School Principal Meredith Pennotti said, but it’s not entirely unexpected either. “We have come up with a combination of practice, school culture, and community involvement that leads to high student achievement,” Pennotti said when asked about Stanford University’s CREDO report. “I think we are meeting the mission. We set out to validate the idea that all children can learn and we’re doing that every day.” According to the CREDO report, the findings of the study show that a typical …

Red Bank Charter School's Donation Crush

Word of a donation relief drive spread beyond the state, attracting donations from all over for Hurricane Sandy victims.

The Hurricane Sandy relief drive was apparently organized by the families of children at Red Bank Charter School. With parts of the state devastated by the first category one hurricane to ever hit the Jersey Shore and many homeless, a call was put out for donations of everything from canned goods to winter coats, toiletries and even diapers. Soon, word spread to families in Pennsylvania that their neighbors were in need of some help. Soon, those families asked a local radio station for help in getting the word out that donations were needed. On Monday, a 40-foot trailer pulled up to Lunch Break loaded with more than anyone, even the organization's Executive Director Gwen Love, could have expected. At around noon Monday, Love was on the …

The Spook Show Must Go On

It's November, but trick or treating must go on.

Halloween can't be stopped.  A week after Hurricane Sandy tore up the east coast and in the process put a hurt on Halloween and delayed trick or treating, costumed kids were back at it Monday night in Red Bank, touring neighborhoods dressed up as ninjas and zombies and super heroes all looking for one thing: candy. Though Mayor Pat Menna warned residents against trick or treating noting dangers that still lurk out there, including some downed wires in parts of town, Gov. Chris Christie's declaration that Halloween should resume Nov. 5 was enough, it seems, to convince kids and parents to hit the street. We caught up with the group above on Prospect Avenue, a road still without power. The kids, all students at Red Bank Charter School, …

Battle Under the Bright Lights

Students from the Red Bank Middle School and Red Bank Charter School met for the annual Count Basie Cup Friday.

The stakes are large, the pressure high. For the next year, until they meet again on the field under the bright lights, the winner of the Count Basie Cup gets bragging rights and the title of Red Bank champion. On Friday, the respective girls and boys soccer teams of Red Bank Middle School and Red Bank Charter School met on the turf field at Count Basie Park for their annual rivalry games. Hundreds of fans gathered in the stands to cheer on their favorite team and the action didn’t disappoint. After drawing to a tie last year, the girls teams looked poise to repeat the performance, playing a stalemate down to the final seconds. With less than 10 seconds left in the game, however, Jacqui Valdetano scored the game-winning goal off of a pass …
