Returning Councilmen Anthony Pellegrino and Jeff DeSalvo will take their oaths of office tonight when the Shrewsbury Borough Council reorganizes. Mayor Michael Skudera has said the resolutions will be sent to the Legislature, Board of Freeholders and the Board of Public …

With Shrewsbury Still Dark, Mayor Absolves JCP&L

Mayor says the power conglomerate has its hands full and has been communicating well following Hurricane Sandy.

When Hurricane Irene caused major power outages throughout Monmouth County last year, local officials were quick to criticize power conglomerate Jersey Central Power and Light for its failure to communicate with area municipalities and act quickly enough to restore electricity. What followed was a JCP&L apology tour of sorts. Company executives hit the road, appearing at council meetings and town halls to take a punishment most felt was well deserved. Humbled by a storm that arrived on shore with only a fraction of its expected intensity, JCP&L promised to do better next time. In Shrewsbury, the lights are still out. Route 35, the town's central artery, is black at night, its traffic lights still dimmed and its bordering businesses all …

Sickles Park Traffic Debate Continues

Shrewsbury continues to seek ways to fix traffic and safety concerns tied to overuse of Sickles Park.

Shrewsbury Council and borough residents continue to discuss possible remedies to help keep traffic under control and children safe on neighborhood roads leading to the town’s most widely used park. At a recent council meeting, ideas for how to slow drivers down when approaching and leaving Sickles Park ranged from erecting temporary signs to installing speed bumps along Sickles Place, the short road and cul-de-sac that leads to the popular park. Officials and residents are worried that the small street presents a safety risk for children, especially during the weekends when multiple youth sports activities are held at the park. According to public comments from residents, drivers go well in excess of the posted 25-mph speed limit, speed …

Shrewsbury's New Chief, Officially

Shrewsbury's Acting Police Chief Lou Ferraro was sworn in as chief at Monday's council meeting.

Lou Ferraro’s career has always headed to this point. He’ll even tell you as much now that it’s here. When the lifelong Shrewsbury resident first joined the department more than 20 years ago, the end goal was always the same. The only thing that stood between Ferraro and the position as the borough’s top law enforcement officer was time. On Monday, borough council swore Ferraro in as Shrewsbury Police Department Chief, striking the acting title he’s carried around for months and making the promotion permanent. With council chambers featuring a standing-room-only crowd comprised of family, friends, and cops from Shrewsbury and surrounding towns, Ferraro assumed his new role, officially. Just how long had he waited for this day? “My entire …

Youth Sports Lead to Traffic, Safety Concerns

Shrewsbury's athletic fields are used for as many as a dozen games some weekend days.

The park is located at the rear of a cul-de-sac on a dead end street with available parking, it appears, for no more than a half-dozen vehicles. During most weekdays, Sickles field is empty. On the weekends, however, the park regularly plays host to numerous youth sports games, sometimes more than a dozen scheduled one after the other, residents complain. The problem with the overuse and poor scheduling of the fields is that it creates a safety hazard for everyone from the children on the sports teams and those living in the neighborhood to drivers who have to navigate the congested streets and even the parents who drive in excess of the posted speed limit just to get to the fields in time. “I don’t mind people playing there,” Shrewsbury …

The basic safety rule, of not crossing anyplace but a crosswalk, is the place to start. Teaching children to dash from the car, across a busy street, is not a good life lesson. Having a designated crosswalk, with a crossing guard, coupled with a designated drop-off area would be a great accompaniment to any scheduling changes.   more ›

Road Conditions Threaten Trash Pickup in Shrewsbury

Homeowners of Sunnybank Drive could lose trash and brush pickup because their privately-owned street is covered with potholes and is nearly impassable.

It’s more than just an idle threat. If the residents of Sunnybank Drive don’t take the steps soon to improve their nearly impassable private street, the borough could eliminate their trash and brush pickup. The issue, Shrewsbury’s Department of Public Works Forman Ron Neis told the borough at its council meeting Monday night, is that the narrow drive off of Sycamore Avenue with its beyond-poor road conditions have made it a safety hazard for large vehicles attempting to navigate Sunnybank Drive. It’s been an issue for years, he said, but recently the problem has become more severe as some property owners have failed to maintain the private road. The road is beset by poor drainage, missing curbs and patchwork pavement, the result of a road …

If the road is truly a private road, then you need to look to the deed to see who is reasonable for maintaining it. If there is an easement and there is a requirement that more than one person maintains it, then a lawsuit may be brought in chancery division to force the repair. As one resident has an attorney, it appears that this is what they have in mind. However, the bottom line is home resale…   more ›
