Shrewsbury police reported the following incidents and arrest from April 27 to May 2 ... Incidents: • A theft was reported in the area of Broad Street on April 27. The victim reported that merchandise valued at approximately $1,020 was allegedly stolen. Patrolman Frank Neary is investigating. • A theft was reported in the area of Broad Street on April 27. The victim reported that property valued at approximately $400 was stolen. An interactive map, produced by New Jersey Spotlight and published late last week, provides a complete breakdown of every insurance claim paid in New Jersey since Hurricane Sandy by town, giving further insight into the totality of losses suffered during the late-October storm. Information from color-coded map was compiled using the most recent data from the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance (DOBI). Based on the most recent data, Shrewsbury incurred a total of $2,810,033 in Sandy-related losses, of which $2,667,286 has been paid. The Shrewsbury Towne-Monmouth Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution announced the winners of this year’s essay contest, with Shrewsbury's Michelle Mazzucca taking third place for the eighth grade category. For more than 25 years, an essay topic has been determined by the society’s headquarters in Washington, DC in conjunction with local public, private, parochial schools and registered home study programs. Students in grades five through eight are invited to participate in the contest. An Ocean Grove man remains behind bars after being charged in a 29-count indictment for a litany of alleged crimes in Shrewsbury, Eatontown and Neptune. Douglas Alderman, 53, was indicted by a Monmouth County grand jury this week on 29 counts accusing him of forging checks whose proceeds netted him tens of thousands of dollars. Grand jurors also found justification to uphold multiple charges of burglary. Authorities claim Alderman forged checks at multiple banks in the region on eight occasions last year, including: He also is accused of burglarizing Summit Financial in Eatontown on July 12, as well as JB Management in Eatontown on July 14, when he allegedly stole laptops and cash. U.S. Postal Service rates increase by one cent
Red Bank and Shrewsbury residents going to the post office will need to carry an extra penny or two. Postage rates will rise slightly today, according to the U.S. Postal Service. According to an announcement by the postal service, new postage rates go into effect today, with letter and postcard stamps being affected. The U.S. Postal Service relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations and doesn’t receive tax dollars for operating expenses. Stamp prices increase one cent, from 45 cents to 46 cents, to mail one-ounce letters. Postcard stamps also see a one-cent increase, from 32 cents to 33 cents. While you and I pay 46 cents to mail a letter now ___Big Business still only pays 34 cents to get the same exact service that you and I pay 46 cents for.
